How long does SEO take to show results?
Google says SEO usually needs four months to a year to put improvements in place and then see the benefit. In practice, technical fixes and Google Business Profile changes can show movement within weeks, specific city and service searches start ranking in two to three months, and steady enquiries from search typically build between four and twelve months — faster for established sites, slower for new domains and competitive industries.
Key takeaways
- Expect first signs (impressions, indexing) in weeks, enquiries in months.
- Local SEO on Google Maps is usually the fastest win for nearby customers.
- Specific city and service searches rank before broad, competitive ones.
- Track impressions, queries and enquiries — rankings move last.
- Nobody can guarantee a #1 ranking; be wary of anyone who does.
“How long before we show up on Google?” is the first question almost every business owner asks about SEO — and the answer they hear is usually either a vague “it depends” or a promise of page one in 30 days. Neither helps you plan.
This guide gives you an honest, phase-by-phase timeline: what you should see in the first weeks, when enquiries usually start, and why some businesses move faster than others. It is written for Indian small and mid-sized businesses — clinics, builders, coaching institutes, manufacturers, local services and online stores.
The short answer
Google itself says that in most cases SEO needs four months to a year to first put improvements in place and then see the benefit — that line comes from its own guide, Do you need an SEO?. That matches what we see: technical fixes and Google Maps changes can show movement within weeks, but rankings that bring regular enquiries are built over months.
A month-by-month SEO timeline
Every site is different, but the work — and the results — usually follow this order:
| Phase | What gets done | What you can expect to see |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–4 | Technical audit and fixes, Search Console set-up, sitemap, page titles, Google Business Profile clean-up | Pages indexed properly; impressions start to appear in Search Console |
| Months 2–3 | New or improved service and city pages, internal links, first reviews and listings | More impressions, first rankings for specific, low-competition searches, some Maps calls |
| Months 4–6 | Content for buyer questions, more reviews, local citations, earned links | Clicks and enquiries start to come from search; ranking for more valuable terms |
| Months 6–12 | Keep publishing, improve pages that almost rank, build reputation | Steady, compounding traffic; competitive terms start to move |
Why some sites rank faster than others
- Age and history of the domain. A brand-new website has no reputation yet. An older site that was simply badly built often jumps quickly once it is fixed.
- Competition for the search. “Dentist in Indirapuram” is far easier than “best dentist in Delhi”. City and service-specific searches move first.
- How much useful content you have. One home page cannot rank for twenty services. Each service and area needs its own clear page.
- Technical health. Slow, broken or hard-to-crawl pages hold everything back. Speed and mobile-friendliness are the base, not a bonus.
- Reviews and mentions. For local searches especially, genuine Google reviews and listings on trusted sites decide who appears in the map pack.
- Consistency. SEO that is done for two months and then stopped rarely sticks. Small monthly work beats one big push.
Local SEO is usually the fastest win
If customers find you nearby — clinics, salons, restaurants, home services, showrooms — the Google Maps results are where the quickest gains usually are. A fully completed and accurate Google Business Profile, the right primary category, real photos and a steady flow of reviews can change your Maps visibility within weeks, long before your website ranks for competitive terms.

What a realistic first 90 days looks like
Fix what stops Google reading the site
Indexing errors, slow pages, missing titles and descriptions, duplicate pages and broken links. Submit a sitemap in Google Search Console.
Give every service and area a proper page
One clear page per service (and per city, where you genuinely serve it) that answers what, who, where, how long and what affects the cost.
Clean up your Google Business Profile and reviews
Same name, phone and address everywhere, the right categories, real photos, and a simple routine for asking happy customers for reviews.
Answer the questions buyers ask before they call
Costs and what affects them, timelines, comparisons, “how to choose” — the same questions people now also ask ChatGPT and Google’s AI answers.
Measure enquiries, not just rankings
Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form leads from search, so you can see which pages actually bring business.
A real example: our own website
When we rebuilt the Orizova Digital website in October 2026 — fast pre-rendered pages, one page per service, industry and city, schema and answer-first summaries — daily Google impressions grew from under 20 at the start of October to 40–100 a day by the last week of the month, according to Google Search Console. That is the “first signs” stage: Google is testing the pages. Clicks and enquiries come as rankings firm up over the following months.
You can read exactly what we did in the Orizova Digital case study.
How to tell if SEO is working before rankings arrive
In the first months, rankings are the last thing to move. Watch these instead in Google Search Console:
- More pages indexed, and fewer indexing errors
- Impressions rising week on week, even if clicks are still low
- New search queries appearing that match your services and cities
- Average position improving for specific, long searches first
- More calls, direction requests and website clicks in your Google Business Profile
Can you speed SEO up?
You cannot force Google, but you can remove delays. Publish pages that genuinely answer searches, link them from your existing pages, keep the site fast, and build reviews from real customers. Crawling and re-indexing of updated pages can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, so request indexing in Search Console for important new pages — see Google’s note on asking Google to recrawl.
If you need enquiries this month, run Google Ads alongside SEO. Ads bring traffic from day one, and the search terms that convert tell you which pages to build for SEO. Our Google Ads budget guide explains how to start small.
Red flags when an agency talks about timelines
- A guaranteed #1 ranking, or page one “in 15 days”
- Hundreds of backlinks per month for a low fixed price
- Reports that only show rankings for terms nobody searches
- No access for you to Search Console, Analytics or your Google Business Profile
- No clear list of what will be done each month
Our checklist of 15 questions to ask before hiring a digital marketing agency covers this in detail.

Ask on WhatsAppUsually longer than for an established site — often six months or more for competitive searches, because a new domain has no history or reviews yet. Specific city and service searches can start moving within the first few months.
Google Business Profile fixes can change your Maps visibility within weeks. Reviews, citations and local pages build over months.
Yes, if you can give it time. Once pages rank, the traffic does not stop the day you stop paying, unlike ads. Many businesses run ads for quick enquiries while SEO builds.
Check it is indexed in Google Search Console, that robots.txt or a noindex tag is not blocking it, and that you have a page that matches what people search. A brand-new site can take a few weeks to be crawled.
Rankings can drop if competitors improve, Google updates its systems or your site develops problems. Regular, steady work protects them.
